Los Angeles, CA — The United States men’s national soccer team emerged victorious over long-time rivals Mexico in a high-stakes CONCACAF final Sunday night, winning 2-1 in front of a roaring crowd at SoFi Stadium.
The match, charged with emotion and intensity, showcased the very best of North American football. With both teams bringing strong lineups and passionate fan support, the final lived up to its historic rivalry.
Early Edge for the U.S.
The United States opened the scoring in the first half, with captain Christian Pulisic slotting home a calm finish in the 34th minute after a quick counter-attack. The goal electrified the stadium, where red, white, and blue flags flew proudly among a sea of green-clad Mexican supporters.
Mexico, however, refused to back down.
Mexico’s Fightback
In the 58th minute, Mexico found their breakthrough. A perfectly delivered corner kick met the head of striker Santiago Giménez, who powered the ball past U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner to level the score at 1-1. The goal reignited hopes for El Tri and set up a tense final half-hour.
Despite chances for both sides, the match remained tied at the end of regulation, forcing extra time.
Pepi the Hero in Extra Time
The turning point came in the 112th minute. After a deflected shot in the box, substitute Ricardo Pepi was in the right place at the right time to slot home the winner for the United States. The goal sent the U.S. bench into celebration and proved decisive as Mexico struggled to respond in the closing minutes.
A Statement Win
With this victory, the U.S. clinches its second straight CONCACAF title, continuing its recent dominance in the region. Head coach Gregg Berhalter praised his squad’s composure under pressure.
“This was about heart, focus, and staying united,” Berhalter said after the match. “Beating Mexico in a final means everything to this team and to our fans.”
Mexico’s coach, meanwhile, called the result “disappointing,” but noted the quality of the game and vowed to come back stronger.
