In the 61st minute, after a tangle with defender Dara O’Shea, Ronaldo was first shown yellow — but VAR called the referee to the screen, and the decision turned red. One flash. One moment. And history changed.
It was his 226th appearance for Portugal, yet the first time he was dismissed wearing his nation’s colors — a rare blemish on a record built over two decades.
Now, the veteran forward risks missing the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, with FIFA rules suggesting a ban of at least two or three games for violent conduct. A suspension he cannot serve in warm-up matches. A punishment that may follow him into the tournament he desperately wants to reach for the sixth time.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez defended his captain, saying the decision felt harsh — a push, a struggle, a moment misread by angles and cameras. Ronaldo, he said, had been wrestled all night, pulled and pushed inside the box.
